Importance of Managing by Walking Around
Nothing’s more irritating for an employee when he/she needs his/her supervisor but the latter is nowhere to be found. It’s more depressing to know that in a few cases, the employees will immediately conclude that the supervisor or the manager is not around when without looking for him/her. It’s like automatic for them to assume that the supervisor is at another place. It may weaken their confidence in the supervisor and hopefully not, their respect as well.
One of the best tips I got from my manager a few years back when I became a supervisor was to walk around and oversee what’s happening in our operations we even installed some home security cameras to manage them. Own the floor and take charge. Manage your employees and your business by walking around especially if it should involve thorough checking like the gold and coin business.
There are lots of benefits if you take your time to visit and observe. The most important reason for doing is to be able to know at least know what’s going on with your employees. You’d have a very difficult time managing them if you don’t know what they’re doing and what’s going on with the business. If there is something urgent that the employees might need you to attend to, you’re always there and you’re updated on their performance as you’re seeing it real time. It’s going to be much easier for you to do a performance review.
It’s also good business practice as you could be more proactive when it comes to potential challenges in your business processes. You may encounter something that you can deal with immediately. It could be possible that if you ignore it, it would grow to be a more serious problem. It would be good that you took care of it before it reaches devastating proportions. I’ve encountered this once and it came from one honest mistake to a horrible dilemma for the department. I’ve made a mistake as well of not taking care of it effectively. Good thing is that I fixed it and it saved our jobs.
Another important consideration in managing by walking around is how your employees gaming desks will look at you. It creates your image as a supervisor or manager. Treat them equally. Of course, employees will have different opinions as to why you’re walking around. Some of them might think that you’re just showing off, or some of them might get scared, some of them may even be distracted but the best thing is that some of them will know that you are doing your job well. Just don’t mind them. Continue doing what you’re supposed to do.
It would also come down how well you manage your time. Observing your employees will take a great deal of time and you may very well spend it almost half you entire shift. You probably have lots of paper work as well and other responsibilities to attend to so prioritize well and focus on the task at hand. But show your employees that you are there.
